Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, two leaders in the field of educational leadership, have worked with SDSU Global Campus to develop an Online Preliminary Administrative Services Credential program.
For teachers who want to become principals or school administrators, career advancement can be challenging.
Even after years of teaching, California educators need to pass three cycles of the California Administrator Performance Assessment (CalAPA) to be recommended for the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential, which allows them to work in an administrative role in a school system. This process can be lengthy and difficult, and many prospective school leaders are forced to take these exams without guidance, while also managing their day-to-day teaching schedule.
With SDSU’s Online Preliminary Administrative Services Credential Program, students can take advantage of a curriculum that’s been designed by the College of Education to help them pass the three CalAPA cycles. Students will develop their educational leadership skills through online coursework that’s easy to integrate with their day-to-day schedules. Coursework is also supplemented with field experiences that educate through example, so students can gain first-hand experience in school administration and become equity-driven leaders in their school community.
The program was developed with the help of Douglas Fisher, Ph.D., and Nancy Frey, Ph.D., two well-respected, highly-decorated leaders in the field of education.
Professor Fisher is the Department Chair of Educational Leadership at SDSU and oversees the Administrative Services program. He is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame and is the recipient of an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award, the Farmer award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, and a Christa McAuliffe award for excellence in teacher education. He is a board member of the International Reading Association and a past board member of the Literacy Research Association.
Nancy Frey is a Professor of Educational Leadership at SDSU. She will be co-teaching several courses in the program, including EDL 650, Professional Growth Leadership. Professor Frey is a recipient of the Christa McAuliffe award for excellence in teacher education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, as well as a co-recipient of NCTE’s 2004 Kate and Paul Farmer award for outstanding writing for their article, “Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School,” published in The English Journal. In 2008, she received the Early Career Achievement Award from the Literacy Research Association.
Both professors have won Faculty Monty Awards at SDSU and serve the community by teaching and leading at Health Sciences High in City Heights. Fisher and Frey designed the entire learning experience and will be personally involved in the field placement experiences to ensure students get the most out of the program.
